On Thursday, Kapil Sibal, the minister of Human Resource Development (HRD) launched a low price laptop and will be available at price tag $35 or Rs. 1500. This is specially developed for the students and for changing the class room education in the India. Kapil Sibal told to the reporters, “Our target is to bring it (the price) down to $10 a piece and our research teams are engaged in that project. In the meanwhile, we have developed this low cost access-cum-computing device.”


This laptop will be available after 5 or 6 months due to some issues of manufacture and distribution. The minister Sibal also said, “Our learners should get it in 2011 and the government will provide a 50 per cent subsidy per computer.” This laptop is the world’s cheapest laptop. This sleek looking laptop is designed by the experts at IIT, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Indian Students of Science, Bangalore.
This cheapest laptop is not bigger in size. Its size is similar to the iPad. It has an inbuilt keyboard and also comes with the touch-screen. The device has USB port, Wi-Fi connectivity and media player for playing stored media files. It also has 2GB RAM (Random Access Memory), and is supported by a 2 watt system. The laptop offers solar battery support as an alternate for poor supply area.
This access-cum-computing device does not contain a hard-drive. It supports many features such as video-web conferencing, searchable PDF reader, multimedia content viewer (pdf, ods, xls, docs, adp, bmp, zip, AVI, jpeg, png, gif, AC3). Kapil Sibal said, “Initially manufacturing might be done in Taiwan or some other place but eventually it will be done in India.” This is to be expected that the laptop will be available by 2011 for students. The price is further may reduced and would be $10 or Rs. 470.
